Jake DeBrusk shares his reasons for signing with the Canucks
Jake DeBrusk, the Canucks forward, followed his instincts to choose Vancouver over numerous other offers upon the opening of the free agent market on Canada Day.
Jake DeBrusk appeared on a recent episode of the Cam & Strick podcast, where he recounted his experience on the first day of free agency and his decision to ink a long-term deal with the Vancouver Canucks.
He revealed that despite receiving numerous offers, a strong intuition led him to choose Vancouver as his new team.
"There were a lot of offers," DeBrusk said.
He added, "Honestly, I wanted to hear them all out. It was my first free agency, and they were good offers; some were getting close to what I wanted. But in saying that, Vancouver hit everything on the head, so it was kind of hard to compete with that deal."
"I was feeling strong; my gut was telling me Vancouver."
Jake DeBrusk, the former Boston Bruins first-round pick, elaborated that when the Canucks expressed interest, he sensed they were the leading contenders to secure his services. He likened the experience to Christmas morning and expressed satisfaction with his decision to join Vancouver.
"Vancouver reached out, and I knew they were pretty much the frontrunners going into free agency," DeBrusk said.
He added, "I felt like it was Christmas. At the same time, you never know if anything will change. It's a lot of unknown, so I'm happy it worked out that way."
In the 2023-24 season, at age 27, DeBrusk notched 40 points (19 goals, 21 assists), accrued 18 penalty minutes, and achieved a plus-four rating across 80 regular-season games with the Boston Bruins. His playoff performance saw him contribute 11 points (five goals, six assists) in 13 games.
